Goodbye Live Journal. I hardly knew ya!

So I think I'm calling it quits on my LJ account. With Flickr and Tumblr, I can't find time to update this too often. I'll still be around because I do enjoy and use the Austin Community LJ group as well as other friends who still update, but I'm moving on.

Epic Concert [09 Jun 2008|01:04am]
Gitanajali and I just got back from seeing the Cure in concert. Luckily the terrible opening band "65 Days of Static" only played 30 minutes which was good because the Cure played for 3+ hours. It was amazing. Everytime we thought they were done, they came out for another encore totally 3 in all.

I still can't believe I got to see them live. If you have a chance to catch them live, I highly recommend it.

Has anyone seen this article?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080528/od_nm/twin_dc

This is my favorite paragraph:

The two sisters , who were not named, found they were born in the same hospital in 1973 around the same time and a DNA test subsequently showed they were identical twins.

Did they really need the DNA test to prove they were identical? Just saying...

Got tickets to see Kids in the Hall tonight at the Paramount Theater! It has been 4-5 years since I last saw them live and I'm super excited.

Greenling Box #3 - Revenge of the Greens [08 Feb 2008|09:34pm]
Here is the content of our third box of local produce:

Green Cabbage
Rio Grapefruit
Broccoli
Bok Choy (as big as a small baby)
Collard Greens
Radish
Brussels Sprouts
Baby Spinach or Assorted Salad Mix
Baby Arugula
Cilantro
Assorted Microgreens
Sunflower Sprouts

We have already used the collard greens and baby arugula as a pizza topping (wilted then sauteed with garlic and pancetta). Plus the usual big salads with the mixed greens, microgreens and radishes.

Recipes for week 2 [28 Jan 2008|06:32pm]
We made a conscious effort to avoid making glops this week.

Our first meal was homemade pizza with microgreens, onions, and goat cheese. We also had a salad to use our lettuce, carrots, and radishes.

Our second meal was halibut with salsa verde sauce which we quickly realized qualified for glob status. But it used our field greens and was yummy. This was served with roasted potatoes and roasted brussel sprouts tossed in olive oil and pancetta. Pancetta makes everything taste good.

We continue to eat the citrus with breakfast and lunches.

Organic Produce Week 2 [28 Jan 2008|06:29pm]
After barely being able to eat all the damn produce we got in week one, we got the second batch last Wednesday which consisted of:

Collard Greens
Romaine Lettuce
Baby Carrots (still cute!)
Baby Radishes (even cuter!)
Grapefruit
Some type of tangerines
Myer lemons
Onions
Red Potatoes
Yams
Micro Greens (Kale)
Brussel Sprouts
Broccoli
Field Greens

We promptly gave the collard greens away because we were overloaded with greens this week. We have also decided to go on an every other week schedule to give us more variety as items come into season.

Our week of glops... [28 Jan 2008|06:22pm]
We had a successful week turning our organic produce into glob like substances.

We made a potato and broccoli puree (green glop #1) as a side dish for chicken breasts stuff with goat cheese and the micro-greens we got. This was accompanied by a salad of the romaine lettuce, grapefruit and avocado. We also mashed the yams (orange glob) with chipotle chilies in adobo sauce.

We were able to use the collard greens in a polenta recipe producing green glob #2. The collard greens were wilted and then pureed and mixed into the polenta. We then roasted bell peppers and carrots as a topping to this dish. We also had salad with this meal as well.

The rest of the citrus was eaten either for breakfast or lunch. We used the lemons to make a pistachio cardamom pound cake with a citrus glaze. It was delicious.

Organic Produce Experiment [17 Jan 2008|10:29pm]
We signed up for a weekly delivery of locally grown organic produce delivered to our front door each Wednesday from www.greenling.com.

Since the produce is seasonal, each week we are going to be challenged to come up with new ideas and recipes to use the fruits and veggies that arrive each week (you have no idea what you are going to get)

Our first batch:

Collard Greens
Romaine Lettuce
Baby Carrots (so cute!)
Grapefruit
Some type of tangerine
Myer lemons
Onions
Red Potatoes
Yams
Micro Greens (Radish)
Sprouts
Broccoli

Stay tuned as we come up with creative ways to consume these items without just blending them all together in some sort of smoothie/veggie soup/V8 concoction.

I've decided to end the whole mess around who owns Antarctica by claiming the whole thing myself.

Maine Rocks!!!! [12 Aug 2007|07:27pm]
There is so much good food in Portland that my stomach may explode.

Do you know how to make the best french fries in the world? First you start with high quality potatoes and then you fry them in duck fat. Yes you heard me right, duck fat. There is a place in Portland called, oddly enough, Duck Fat that is simply incredible. So if you ever find yourself with a couple pounds of duck fat that you don't know what to do with, I suggest making french fries.

The best dining experience so far has been a small place called Bresca that had the best dessert I have ever eaten in my life. It was 3 beignets filled with lemon curd and then topped with wild Maine blueberry compote and rasberry sorbetta. The dinner was great as well, but the dessert was the cherry on top of a great dining experience.

We spent the day at the Portland Head Light which is a beautiful lighthouse that George Washington himself gave the orders to build. It has been helping Maine sailors since 1776 navigate the waters around Portland.

I will relate futher culinary experiences in future entries.

First update since 1986!!! [04 Aug 2007|09:44am]
It's been a year since I posted last which means we have been in our new house for that long as well. I'll try and get some recent photos on Flickr especially now we finally entered the 21st century and bought a scanner.

The big news is our trip to Portland, Maine in a week. We'll be there 7 days enjoying life along the harbor eating lobstah and chowdah everyday. In between all the good food, I'm sure we'll go see some lighthouses or something, but mainly it is about stuffing our craws with food especially Maine blueberries.

It is also my birthday on the 15th so everyone send me presents.

Moving! [02 Jul 2006|06:39pm]
Gitanjali and I are putting our house on the market tomorrow. After a month of house hunting, we found an awesome house on Saturday, made an offer and the home owners accepted.

Today was a flurry of activity as we scrubbed our house from floor to ceiling to get it ready to show. Luckily, we did this about two weeks ago when we thought we may go on the market earlier so it wasn't as bad as it could be.

Hopefully someone will buy our quickly and we can get this move completed quickly and with as little pain as possible.

Blueberries [18 Jun 2006|03:46pm]
Can you overdose on fresh blueberries?

My in-laws were in town this weekend and before they came they picked 1000 pounds of blueberries from a orchard near their home in Houston. It looks like they brought us half of them which I've been eating nonstop since Friday night. I always forget how good really fresh fruit is. Half of the stuff we buy nowadays are picked early and then subjected to all sorts of gases to ripen them resulting in a massive reduction in flavor.

I forsee lots of blueberry cobbler in my future...

So old.... [07 May 2006|09:13pm]
Gitanjali and I were at a party today and one of the guests brought their teenage daughters. One was starting 9th grade next year and was asking us where we fell in the whole high school food chain.

I started to tell her when I was in high school the Grunge scene was just getting starting and there was really a whole new culture to be a part of in school that wasn't part of the traditional high school stereotype.

She just looked at me blankly and asked what Grunge was. I tried to explain it and how it really become popular from like 1991 to 1994 and perhaps she had heard of bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. She then said she was born in 1992 and that was our official "We are so fucking old" moment.

My other "I'm so fucking old" moment was today May 7th when my brother turned 30!! Now he's so fucking old too.

It's all down hill from here ;)

going to the chickens [15 Apr 2006|07:41pm]
My backyard neighbor just built a chicken coop in their backyard. How do I know it is a chicken coop you ask? It's because it is filled with chickens.

Well, actually it only looks like it has two chickens...and a million baby chicks.

If my ass gets woken up tomorrow by a damn rooster, there will be hell to pay.

Edit: My ass was woken up today at 6:30 am by now confirmed rooster. Time to crack open a 6 pack of whoop ass.

Peak Oil Solved! [09 Apr 2006|11:08pm]
We just finished watching Sahara and Matthew McConaughey is the most oily looking man on the planet. I think we can solve this whole peak oil issue by drilling on McConaughey's face. Even in the scenes where he's just come out of the ocean, he still looks like he just rolled around in some grease.

New bathroom pics! [02 Apr 2006|05:35pm]
Parents left today after a nice visit. My Dad brought his digital camera so I'm finally able to get some photos of the new bathroom posted.
